Across Africa, many waste and renewable-energy ventures demonstrate technical potential but struggle to move beyond grant-funded pilots, small demonstrations or early commercial deployment. The session would explore the type of finance required at different stages of growth, where entrepreneurs can access it, and the role of grants, concessional finance, equity, debt, blended finance, guarantees and corporate investment. A further focus would be the role of SMEs in decentralised energy and waste-management systems. Across Africa, many waste and renewable-energy ventures demonstrate technical potential but struggle to move beyond grant-funded pilots, small demonstrations or early commercial deployment. The session would explore the type of finance required at different stages of growth, where entrepreneurs can access it, and the role of grants, concessional finance, equity, debt, blended finance, guarantees and corporate investment. A further focus would be the role of SMEs in decentralised energy and waste-management systems. While grid-connected projects remain important, decentralised ventures can respond more quickly to local waste and energy needs, particularly in farms, food-processing facilities, municipalities, communities and underserved markets. These SMEs are not merely project implementers; they are engines for local economic development, job creation, skills development and value retention.

In March 2024, Cape Town hosted the first-ever Global Entrepreneurship Congress Africa (GEC+Africa), drawing over 2,000 delegates from across Africa and around the world. Startups, MSMEs, investors, corporates, policymakers, and ecosystem leaders came together for two powerful days that set bold new goals for entrepreneurship on the continent.
The Global Entrepreneurship Network is a 501(c)3 organisation that operates an array of programmes in 200 countries aimed at making it easier for anyone, anywhere to start and scale a business.
22 On Sloane is Africa’s largest entrepreneurship campus, enabling Startups and MSMEs to scale through expert programmes, funding opportunities, and access to global markets.
